Chemometrics

Is the science of relating measurements made on a system with the state of a system. Those relations are established via mathematical and statistical methods. This is a discipline that was set up almost 30 years ago by S. Wold, H. Wold and H. Martens. A striking example of the possible relationships that can be established between different quality attributes, is that associated with choosing fruit in a grocery shop. We tend to chose fruit of a particular color (yellow bananas instead of green) or smell (a cantaloupe by its fruity aroma) because we know from experience (or data-base of historical events) that those properties are related to the fruits maturation, taste or fructose content.

Chemometrics offers a toolbox of methods which include:

  • Design of Experiments techniques to plan highly informative experiments;
  • Multivariate exploratory data analysis algorithms, to understand basic patterns in the available data sets (e.g. clustering and principal component analysis, PCA);
  • Multivariate calibration methods to establish high-level relationships of complex data (e.g. PLS projection into latent variables or structures);
  • Filtering and signal processing techniques (e.g. to enhance septral features and signal to noise ratio);
  • Visualization techniques based on projection methods;
  • 4Tune Engineering has know-how of all proven and also many of most state-of-the-art methods. We teach, train and are net contributors to the area of Chemometrics for a decade:

    • Quality by Design (Qbd), DOE and Design Space Based Methods;
    • A Good Modeling Set of Practices for Process Scale Independent Multivariate Calibrations;
    • Robust Inferential Sensors based on Process Data Available;

    The greatest danger in modern technology isn't that machines will begin to think like people, but that people will begin to think like machines.”
